Best Underwear to Wear Under a White Dress

We've all heard the saying, "don't wear white after Labor Day." Well, we are here to tell you it's about time to put that rule to rest and the color white is okay to rock all year round! Whether it's wearing a white dress to graduation, a shimmering white gown to your winter formal, or even just a plain white t-shirt or button up, the simplicity and universality of wearing the color white is not going away anytime soon.

Wearing the color white is becoming more and more popular in modern day fashion. While white has always been adored in the warmer months, new trends like the ever so popular "clean girl aesthetic" have made a wave over social media, and place a huge emphasis on cool, calm, minimalism. From rocking a simple plain white tee or a sleek white-on-white outfit, the color white has made its way to becoming an iconic power color for many. But as we all know, "with great power comes great responsibility," and there are still many important things to keep in mind when wearing white, one most notably being, what the heck do you wear under white clothing?

We've all been there before. You've just purchased a new shirt or dress, tried it on, and realized that your bra, underwear, or both were completely exposed through the fabric. What we wear under our OOTDs is just as important as OOTDs themself and choosing the right undergarments can truly make or break an outfit.

When it comes to wearing white, oftentimes there will naturally be some level of sheerness to our clothing, and so the best thing we can do to stay concealed under our clothes is wear our own personal shade of nude. The color "nude" is not a one size fits all sort of deal. Whether that's a brown, caramel, light pink or beige color it is so important we find a tone that blends well with the color of our skin. This way when we dawn our gorgeous white outfits on top, our garments underneath are essentially invisible.

While it may be tempting to opt for a white undergarment under a white outfit, we must remember that wearing white underwear can be just as if not more exposing as wearing black or bright and colorful underwear under white. The color white naturally creates a contrast against our skin tone, drawing focus to certain areas of our body. So, if we are trying to create a moment with a white lace bra visible under a sheer white shirt, by all means go for it! However if we are someone who is struggling to keep their undergarments hidden for their favorite white outfits, then we have the perfect guide for you.

Types of Undergarments

There are two major things to consider when choosing our perfectly invisible undergarments, the first we already mentioned being finding our shade of nude. Once we've found our perfect share of nude, the next thing to take into consideration is deciding which type undergarment will best suit our outfit. Perhaps we're wearing a backless white gown, or a form-fitting white cocktail dress. Up next we are going to go through and define all the different types of undergarments to help you best decide what will best suit you!

Underwear: If our goal is to keep our underwear invisible, then we should also try our best to avoid pantyline (when people are able to see the outline of your underwear through your clothes.) Opting between either seamless nude underwear or a thong can help keep your pantyline hidden, however if the material we are wearing is super thin, then it may be wise to explore other options such as spandex shorts or shapewear!

Spandex Shorts: Spandex shorts are a great way to cover up underneath your favorite LWD (little white dress!) They are comfortable and help hide any exposure from pantyline or short hemlengths.

Shapewear: Similar to seamless spandex shorts, shapewear is an incredible option to help prevent any exposure as well as create an incredible smoothing effect underneath our outfit. Perhaps we are trying to rock a tight form-fitting cocktail dress, well then shapewear may be our new BFF. Many celebrities endorse or have their own lines of shapewear to choose from because believe it or not, this stuff works and will have your body looking snatched!

Slips: Slips are another great way to uphold modesty and comfortability underneath white dress or gown. Slips tend to be a bit loose and would best be suited worn under a dress that is loose and flowy.

Bras: Now finding your perfect bra can be a whole other blog post in itself, but I will leave it at this. From strapped or strapless bras, it is ultimately most important that we know our correct bra size so that we have the right shape and level of support. If you're not sure if you are wearing the correct bra size, then you may be able to head to your nearest lingerie or department store and have a style associate measure you OR look up a bra size calculator online and have a friend measure you with tape measure!

Sticky Bras: Sticky bras are an incredible option to choose from when wearing white backless outfits or deep plunging necklines. Similar to normal bras, there are so many different styles of sticky bras to choose from, all of which offer different levels of support and coverage. Perhaps you are looking for a little extra lift with a rabbit shaped sticky bra, or if cleavage is your goal then try opting for a sticky bra that clasps in the center. If coverage is your main concern, then a simple classic sticky bra or nip covers may be the best choice for you.

Boob Tape: Now my pageant ladies already know where we're going with this, but sometimes any type of bra just won't cut it, and so this is where boob tape comes in handy. Boob tape is an adhesive roll of nude fabric tape that is perfect for creating certain shapes and keeping your breast in a fixed position. Additionally sometimes you can pair boob tape alongside a sticky bra to give you that extra level of lift and support.

Additional Tips on Wearing White

Now that you know all the different types of undergarments that can keep your secrets hidden underneath your white outfits, here are some other great tips to help you rock the color white!

Check your outfit underneath different lighting! Whether it's under direct sunlight during the day, a flash photo, or a dimly lit club at night, the level and types of light around you can also play a role in exposing your undergarments.

Don't wear white to a wedding. This is basically the cardinal rule of being a good wedding guest. Just don't do it.

Carry around a stain stick. Maybe it's just the messy eater in me, but sometimes nothing is more distracting than a little stain on a white outfit. Stain sticks can help you act fast and ensure that stain doesn't stick around for good.

Avoid getting wet. Remember that when white gets wet it also gets see through. Whether you're spending your day at a water park or simply outside sweating on a humid summer day, be mindful about your level of transparency as your level of moisture increases.
